Vascularization strategies

The generation of thick, vascularized three-dimensional (3D) tissues is a key challenge in tissue engineering. Our lab focuses on strategies that promote the formation of microvascular networks essential for proper oxygen transport and nutrient supply to the core of the constructs. Specifically, we develop microfabrication techniques to generate 3D vascularized tissues within custom made perfusion systems and to study the interactions between human endothelial cells, human mesenchymal stem cells and tissue specific cells within biomimetic hydrogels. We also employ statistical experimental methods to identify the optimal combination of experimental parameters (e.g. cell density, cell ratio, matrix composition) to generate interconnected capillary networks within engineered tissues.
