Research

Our interdisciplinary research combines bioengineering, cell and molecular biology, and computational modeling. In particular, we design microfluidic model systems to investigate the mechanisms of metastasis formation by cancer cells within in vivo-like microenvironments. We generate musculoskeletal and vascularized 3D constructs through novel biofabrication approaches and through advanced cell culture systems and custom-built bioreactors. We also work on the development of suitable models to study implant osteointegration and implant-related orthopedic infections.
In our 3D in vitro models we specifically employ human cells not to neglect specie-specific features and to overcome limitations related to possible differences in cell behavior and/or drug metabolism between animal and human cells.
